The Safety Leadership Program recognizes that long term safety improvements are
reliant on effective leadership and that effective leadership is grounded in a better
understanding of one’s attitude and behaviour and of others attitude and behaviour,
“When leaders walk into a workplace they see the behaviour of their people but
they also see reflected in them their own behaviour” (Werngren et al 2005).
It is acknowledged that front line managers and supervisors
have the most influence on implementing any change including
safety culture change.
It is at this level that safety leadership
skills and competencies are the most effective.
The attitude and behaviour of the leaders are at the very root
of individual safety performance and the most powerful way to
influence and change people’s safety attitudes and consequent
behaviour in a sustainable way is via leadership.
The CONNECT Safety Leadership Program (SLP) is a fully
integrated, self-sustained and competency-based program
underpinned by Cognitive Behavioural Safety principles.
SLP is built on three fundamental pillars:
1. It facilitates the acquisition of the necessary leadership
theoretical background
2. It bridges the gap between theory and practice by following
up and monitoring practical applications in the workplace.
3. It provides the organisation with the necessary capabilities
for self-sustainability of the program (Coaching and mentoring
skills for senior supervisors).
Objectives
To improve the quality of leadership in the organisation by provision of leadership competencies and skills to supervisors and managers at all levels.
To address Safe Work Performance as a function of Leadership.
To transfer theoretical knowledge and understanding of leadership competencies into practice in the workplace
.
To provide the means for the sustainability of the program from within the organisation.
On completion of the Safety Leadership Program each participant will have been assessed as “Competent” or “Not Yet Competent” in both the acquisition of theoretical concepts and the practical application of leadership skills in the workplace.
